"The Age of the Individual" Speaker: Susan Lee

Susan Lee earned a M.A. and Ph.D. in economic history from Columbia University after receiving a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College. Her dissertation was awarded Distinction and nominated for a Bancroft Prize. She was a John Jay Fellow and a President’s Fellow. Dr. Lee taught in the economics department at Columbia for several years as an adjunct professor. From 1990-1993 she was a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Lee was an adjunct professor of economics at NYU (2013-2015) and an adjunct professor of sacred theology at General Theological Seminary (2010-11).

As a print journalist, Ms. Lee was a columnist and member of the Editorial Board of the Wall Street Journal (1981-84, 2000-2005); she worked as deputy editor at The New York Times Op-Ed Page (1988-90); as senior editor and columnist at Forbes (1984-88, 1996-98) and at Business Week as senior editor and columnist. She won the Amos Tuck Award as a syndicated columnist while writing for Vogue, and the Institute on Political Journalism’s 2001 Award for Excellence in Economic Journalism.

Susan Lee was a regular panelist on the weekly Journal Editorial Report on PBS (2004-05) and on Wall Street Journal Editorial Board on CNBC (2000-03). Other television work includes ABC-TV’s Nightline (1987-89); ABC-TV’s Good Morning America (1985-90); McNeil-Lehrer NewsHour (1991-96, 2002-03) and as a weekly commentator for NBC-TV’s News at Sunrise (1991-93). She was also a commentator for NPR’s Marketplace (1996-2011).

In addition to technical articles, Ms. Lee is the author of Hands Off: Why Government is a Menace to Economic Health (1996); Susan Lee’s ABZ’s of Money and Finance (1988) and Susan Lee’s ABZ’s of Economics (1987) all published by Simon & Schuster, and co-author of A New Economic View of American History, a college text published by W. W. Norton.

In 2006, Ms. Lee received a Master of Sacred Theology from General Theological Seminary in New York City. She received a M.A. in Divinity (biblical studies) from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 2002.

Susan Lee was a member of the Board of Directors of UJA-FEGS (1990-2006), and served on the Board of Visitors at the University of California-Davis Graduate School of Business (1982-88).  From 2007-09, Dr. Lee was a volunteer teacher in the math department at Brandeis High School. In 2012, Lee became a volunteer with Visiting Nurse Service’s hospice program.
