"What Martin Luther Says About Capitalism": The Wall Street Journal on the Center's 15th annual conference

November 03, 2017

On November 2, The Wall Street Journal published an article by James Mackintosh entitled "What 500 Years of Protestantism Teaches Us About Capitalism's Future." The article discusses the Center on Capitalism and Society's 15th annual conference, The Age of the Individual: 500 Years Ago Today, which was held on October 31, 2017 at Columbia University. Writes Mackintosh, "[Luther's] legacy raises questions that resonate for investors today: Can Communist China become a rich country? And does the political swing towards populism threaten economic growth?... Mr. Phelps and collaborators Saifedean Ammous, Raicho Bojilov and Gylfi Zoega show that even in recent years, countries with more individualistic cultures have more innovative economies."
