The Center is thrilled that Richard Sennett, renowned pioneer in social theory, has accepted the position of Center Fellow at the Center on Capitalism and Society. Beginning in September 2017, Professor Sennett will be working with Center Director Edmund Phelps on research concerning the intersections of social theory and economic theory, such as the importance of agency for job satisfaction and the losses of agency in recent decades.
Professor Sennett’s work in sociology addresses social ties in cities and the effect of urban living on individuals in the modern world. His books explore urban life, public culture and public space and class consciousness among working class families.
Sennett was a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Society of Literature. He is also the founding director of the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University. He has held positions as the Centennial Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics and University Professor of the Humanities at New York University.
Professor Sennett is currently working on Making and Dwelling, a book about open systems and urban design.
